ISLAMIC NOTES: Lessons From The Prophet Muhammad's Love Life | The Types Of Marriages Muslims May Be In

In The Name Of Allah
The Most Gracious The Most Merciful

-From my previous blogs at muslimarvels.tumblr.com and muslimarvels.blogspot.com

Why did the noble Messenger Muhammad [SallAllahu 'alaihi wa sallam] marry many wives? He [SallAllahu 'alaihi wa sallam] was married to several wives to teach Muslims the different kinds of marriages they are allowed to be in. Before some start having doubts about the beloved Messenger Muhammad [SallAllahu 'alaihi wa sallam]'s love life, learn more about Islam before you judge out of ignorance, and take note that:

A: It was a custom many centuries ago for men to marry multiple women. For some, the more wives a man had, the more noble or superior he appeared. Many males back then would be wed to dozens of wives until the ruling in Islam lessened the unlimited number of wives into a maximum of four.
B: It is permitted for a Muslim man to have up to four wives, if capable, for the following reasons: 1- To ensure that, if not all, at least most women are legally married, since it is a known fact that the number of females are far greater than the number of males worldwide. 2- To prevent divorce, separation and disputes between families, as Islam is a way of life that promotes peace and mercy. 3- To increase the number of Muslims who love Allah and His noble Messenger Muhammad SallAllahu 'alaihi wa sallam, so that if one or two of the wives of a man are unable to give kids, still his third or fourth wives can bear more children without leaving the other wives.

Through the blessed marriages of the noble Messenger Muhammad [SallAllahu 'alaihi wa sallam] Muslims have learned that it is okay for a Muslim man to marry:
1// his female boss or employer, a woman of a wealthy background, a woman who is a lot richer than him, a woman who is several years older than him - through the Prophet's marriage with his first wife Khadijah Bint Khuwaylid.

2// a woman who is heavier than him, plus-size or plump or a woman of dark skin [No racism in Islam] - through the Prophet's marriage with Sawdaa Bint Zam'ah.
__________________
3// a virgin, a female who has reached the age of puberty who is a lot younger than him and shares mutual feelings of love - through the Prophet's marriage with 'Aishah Bint Abu Bakr.
__________________
4// his friend's daughter, or a young widow - through the Prophet's marriage with Hafsa Bint 'Umar Bin Al-Khattab.
__________________
5// the half sister of another wife, and to marry during the noble month of Ramadan while abiding by Allah's Rules - through the Prophet's marriage with Zainab Bint Khuzaimah.
__________________
6// the divorced wife of an adopted son, a divorcee, to stay married to wives who share the same names, and to marry one's paternal or maternal cousin - through the Prophet's marriage with Zainab Bint Jahsh.
__________________
7// an old widow, a woman who already has children from previous husbands - through the Prophet's marriage with Umm Salama Hind Bint Abu Umayyah.
__________________
8// one's maid servant or employee, or a woman from a different tribe/nationality/ethnicity to form peaceful relations - through the Prophet's marriage with Juwairiyah Bint Al-Harith.
__________________
9// in absentia, to have the Walima or marriage contract officially signed even if the groom is in one country while the bride is in another country, and the daughter of one's enemy also to form peaceful relations - through the Prophet's marriage with Umm Habiba Ramla Bint Abu Sufyan.
__________________
10// a woman who assertively takes the initiative to propose to him for marriage - through the Prophet's marriage with Maimoonah Bint Al-Harith.
__________________
11// a woman of low social status, a Christian woman who may inshaAllah embrace Islam - through the Prophet's marriage with Maariya Al-Qubtiyyah.
__________________
12// a Jewish woman who may inshaAllah become a true Muslim, and a woman whose marriage may fix the affairs of one's people - through the Prophet's marriage with Safiyyah Bint Huyayy.

Therefore, in Islam, one's age, social and ethnic backgrounds do not necessarily matter when looking for a wife - what is important is the mutual love, understanding and agreement between husband and wife/wives. Allah the Almighty knows best.

Abu Hurayrah (May Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet Muhammad SallAllahu 'alaihi wa sallam said: “A woman may be married for four things: for her wealth, for her lineage, for her beauty and for her religious commitment. Seek the one who is religiously-committed, may your hands be rubbed with dust (an Arabic term meaning 'May you succeed/prosper')."
[Sahih Bukhari / Sahih Muslim]

It was narrated that Allah's Messenger Muhammad SallAllahu 'alaihi wa sallam said, "Allah makes the way to Paradise/Jannah easy for whoever treads the path in search of knowledge [Islamic knowledge which is attained by learning more about Islam]." [Sahih Muslim].
